I’m actually mildly upset that the cover (which I really like) focuses on a girl because that automatically leads you to believe it’s from a female’s point of view. The very first thing I’ll say about SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL is that I had NO idea it was from Travis’s point of view when I first started it. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s pure adventure from start to finish, bursting with excitement and wary romance amidst the backdrop of the 1905 Canadian wilderness. It features a “self-made widow” on the run from her dead husband’s two vengeful brothers. She really broke through with her first novel, a 2007 western called The Outlander. You have to love anyone who pens a biography of the abundantly talented Anderson, especially when they title it “Mulder, It’s Me.” If you’re waving the flag of fandom, wave it high! Her talents remain intact.Īdamson is a Canadian author with books of poetry, a short story collection and a “fan-commissioned biography” of actor Gillian Anderson to her credit. If the new book, Ridgerunner, falters, it’s because of a choice she made, not a rush to print. Author Gil Adamson took 14 years to follow up her debut novel. He is afraid of everything, assumed to have a low IQ, a sketchy abusive past and talks to no one. Kevin is 15 years old, cowering under a table when Torey first meets him, called Zoo Boy for the behaviors he exhibits and his self built cage of chairs and tables. Then he started to draw and paint and showed himself to have a quick wit and a rolling, seething, murderous hatred for his stepfather. As Hayden read to him and encouraged him to read, crawling down into his cage of chairs with him, Kevin talked. He was nearly 16.ĭesperate to see change in the boy, the staff of Kevin's adolescent treatment center hired Hayden. He was afraid to be naked, to change his clothes. He was afraid of water and wouldn't take a shower. He hadn't been out of the building in the four years since he'd come in. He hid under tables and surrounded himself with a cage of chairs. His name was Kevin but his keepers called him Zoo Boy. Penelope is represented by Kimberly Brower of Brower Literary & Management. I had to have one of my co-workers explain the difference between a cyborg and a robot to me. But the idea of a space opera quartet revolving around four fairy tales from the fantastically talented Marissa Meyer? I knew she wouldn't steer me wrong, and I'm happy to say that she didn't! I'll be honest: Going into CINDER, the only thing I knew about cyborgs was the fact that there was a character in the animated TV series TEEN TITANS named Cyborg. Science Fiction has never really been my thing when it comes to outer space, though I've always been fascinated by the moon. The only truly "sci-fi" (to me, this reads "spacey") books I own are ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Beth Revis ( review here) and various ENDER books by Orson Scott Card. ^.~īefore CINDER, the only brush I had with a futuristic fairy tale was Anna Sheehan's A LONG, LONG SLEEP ( reviewed here). I did, however, try to be as impartial as possible when reading and reviewing the book, so this review is based on the book's merits and not my love-fest revolving around Marissa Meyer. I'll admit it now (and you all know it anyway): I'm biased when it comes to CINDER. Threatened attachment, which first evokes protest aimed at the caretaker-“other,” is then transformed, mainly by identification, into states of shame and guilt that aim at maintaining the attachment. Morality is the affective-cognitive outcome of attachment. If one permits libido to stand for the attachment emotions, the origin of hostility and morality in a single source becomes a viable hypothesis. Our path might have been easier if Freud had indeed regarded his libido theory as a theory of the emotions (as he said he did in Group Psychology, 1921, p. In this account, libido theory is the centerpiece of the explanation. Hostility arose out of frustrated libido sublimations and reaction formations of hostility (although in the service of the “ego-instincts”) also made use of the energy of the sexual instincts to deflect them into social and moral purposes. Moreover, the origin of these counterforces was at first located in the sexual instincts themselves (see Chapter 4) as sublimations and reaction formations of the sexual instincts. In his clinical papers, as well as in his books on dreams and jokes, “disgust, shame, and morality” were simply the counterforces against which sexual longings (libido) contended. It was only after his major clinical accounts had been written that Freud undertook a study of the origins of guilt in Totem and Taboo. Freud’s interest in the origins of guilt came relatively late in his work, as he himself acknowledged (1933). Their approaches parallel, in intriguing ways, the new sciences of chaos, complexity, and criticality. In doing so, they combine the techniques of artists, geologists, paleontologists, and evolutionary biologists. Like cartographers mapping landscapes, historians represent what they can never replicate. Gaddis points out that while the historical method is more sophisticated than most historians realize, it doesn't require unintelligible prose to explain. The Landscape of History provides a searching look at the historian's craft, as well as a strong argument for why a historical consciousness should matter to us today. What is history and why should we study it? Is there such a thing as historical truth? Is history a science? One of the most accomplished historians at work today, John Lewis Gaddis, answers these and other questions in this short, witty, and humane book. It was an interesting challenge as a voice over artist, and I felt like I’d grown with the character. R.M.: I loved taking Viola’s/ Illana’s journey with her, helping her develop from this young, frightened girl into a hardened, ruthless young woman. I love how unapologetic it is, how honestly violent and unforgiving the surroundings are painted, how believable each of the characters and their actions are.Ī.P.: What was your favorite part of recording this story? Your least favorite? The easiest? The hardest? It’s definitely the darkest piece of fiction which ventures into the realms of fantasy I’ve recorded. Here’s what she had to say:Ī.P.: Is this is the darkest work of fiction you ever recorded? How did you feel about the story? I had a chance to talk to Rebecca McKernan and ask her a few questions about the audiobook recording process, her take on the story, and more. I can’t wait to get the other two done as well. It’s SO COOL to hear the journey from the little eight-year old Viola to the strong, confident, hard eighteen year old Ilanna. You can get the whole thing over on Amazon. Yes, I’m so stoked to finally say that the audiobook for Child of the Night Guild is finally live! I was so lucky to find an amazing narrator to bring the book to life, and I’m thrilled for you all to listen to it. |
